Optical radiation sensors
General description:
Solar and sky radiation:
The spectral range spans over shorter wave lengths at 300 nm
(UV-B) to longer wave length
at 5000 nm (IR).
The solar and sky radiation is the complete direct or
diffuse sun
radiation striking the earths surface.
UVA-radiation:
The UV-radiation of longer wave length (more than 313 nm) reaches the earths surface
almost unfiltered, browns the human skin and enforces the immune system. In solariums the
biological effect of the UVA-spectrum combined with other spectral ranges is used to take
advantage of the direct pigmenting (melanin colouring). However, radiation which is too
strong will harm the connective tissue and supports aging of the skin.
UVB-radiation:
The UV-range of short wave lengths (below 313 nm) can cause irreversible defects to human
skin, summarized in the recommendation of the CIE. The UV-index is a popular measure for
the sunburn-sensitivity. Directly or compared to other spectral ranges, the measured
values inform about biologically and medically relevant relationships.
